The rectangular panel depicting various flowers in hardstones comprising lapis lazuli, giallo antico and agate against a slate ground, within a gilt-metal mounted palisander moulded frame, originally fitted as the top of a casket, the veneered back showing signs of previous hinges
5¾ x 8½ in. (14.5 x 21.5 cm.) [without frame]; 11 x 14 in. (28 x 35.5 cm.) [with frame]

Lot Essay

Such pietre dure panels were mainly produced in Rome and in the Medici workshops, the Opificio delle pietre dure, founded in 1588 by Grand Duke Ferdinand I de Medici. These panels were sought after by a growing clientèle of wealthy patrons and foreign connoisseurs on their Grand Tour. These panels were often fitted to important in cabinets or caskets, as the present panel would have been.
