Purchased in 1752 by Victor-François de Broglie, Duc de Broglie and Maréchal de France, the hôtel Julliet de Taverny was, until 1777, the residence of Abbé Charles-Maurice de Broglie, Bishop of Noyon. The Duc then decided to occupy the hôtel himself, at which point the central part of the building was extended two-fold towards the garden and was given a new façade by the architect Le Boursier. The walls of the main salon were at that time decorated with an elaborate boiserie carved with arabesques. Seized and stripped of its furnishings during the Revolution, the hôtel then changed hands and in the 19th century belonged to the Duchesse de Montebello, widow of Maréchal Lanne and former Lady-in-Waiting to Empress Marie-Louise. Purchased in 1910 by the American connoisseur and collector Ogden Mills, and then briefly occupied by the American Forces during the First World War, the hôtel was restored in the 1920s, reviving its 18th century interiors with the acquisition of the best furniture, objets d'art and furnishings available in Paris at the time. The lots here offered have remained in the family since then.

Lot Essay

With their pierced spreading body surmounted by a ribbon-tied foliate-wrapped mask of Apollo, these attractive candelabra derive from the celebrated lyre-shaped model by Pierre Gouthière after models by François-Joseph Bélanger for the duchesse de Mazarin in 1781. The sale of the latter's collection on 10-15 December 1781 included one such pair described as being 'par Goutthier'.

A pair of lyre-shaped wall-lights headed by a similar ribbon-tied foliate-wrapped mask of Apollo and executed by Gouthière in 1781 is now in the J.P. Getty Museum, Malibu (ill. in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, vol. I, p. 243, fig. 4.5.12), while a further related pair of wall-lights attributed to Gouthière was sold from the Lagerfeld Collection, Christie's, Monaco, 28-29 April 2000, lot 44 (FF564,000 with premium).
