Lot Essay

Another version of this composition, with several variations, is in The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida. One of the two versions is described by Filippo Baldinucci in his biography of the artist: 'Colorì anche d'assai buon gusto un quadro di mezze figure, nel quale fece vedere il ritratto di se stesso con bizzarro berrettone in capo, e con ricca veste; il tutto tocco di forza: evvi anche dipinta una vaga donna ed un avvistato giovane, che accorda un violino, accostandoselo con bella grazia all'orecchio: la quale opera pure possiede Bettin Francesco Seminati' (F. Baldinucci, Notizie dei Professori del Disegno da Cimabue in qua, Florence, 1681-1728, ed. Ranalli, Florence, 1846, p. 541).
