Lot Essay

The apocryphal signature on this painting has led scholars to consistently misattribute it to Jan Fyt (1611-1661). Greindl, however, has convincingly re-assigned it to Fyt's pupil, David de Coninck, on the basis of stylistic similarities with a signed hunt still-life now in a private collection, Belgium (see E. Greindl, op. cit., 1983, p. 205, fig. 55). This attribution has also been supported by Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, on first-hand examination.
