Lot Essay

Lucien Pissarro took Weston House, Rye from 2 July until about 2 September 1913 sharing with fellow artists James Brown and J.B. Manson. Pissarro completed twelve major oils during this time. This work is one of several sketches for his Rye oils, especially the background of Rye from Leason Hill (A. Thorold, Catalogue of Oil Paintings by Lucien Pissarro, no. 169, pp. 16 and 100). These sketches appear in several of the Lucien Pissarro sketchbooks in the Pissarro Family Archive housed at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

We are very grateful to Anne Thorold for her assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
