[AUSTEN, Jane]. Mansfield Park: A Novel... By the Author of "Sense and Sensibility," and "Pride and Prejudice." London: T. Egerton, 1814.
3 volumes, 12o (172 x 112 mm). Half-titles. (Lacking blank O4 in volume 2 and advertisement leaf in volume 3, Gl in volume one with small repaired tear along lower margin not affecting text.) Modern brown half morocco, spines gilt-lettered, edges gilt.
FIRST EDITION. Mansfield Park was written at Chawton between February 1811 and June 1813 and published in May of the following year in a relatively small edition of around 1250 copies. Priced at 18 shillings in boards, sale of the book was on a commission basis, with Jane Austen retaining the copyright to the work. Although the heroine of Mansfield Park, Fanny Price, was thought priggish and insipid by many of Austen's contemporary readers, the novel was still popular enough for the first edition to have sold out by November 1814. Gilson A6; Keynes p. 11; Sadleir I, 62c. (3)
