2o (400 x 265 mm). Engraved frontispiece before letters, title printed in red and black, engraved folding map, 4 double-page maps, 28 engraved plates (12 double-page), numerous engravings throughout text. (Some light staining, a few tears, minor marginal worming to a few leaves at end.) 19th-century half calf and marbled boards (some rubbing). Provenance: New Jersey Historical Society (embossed stamp on O2).

FIRST EDITION OF OGILBY'S CLASSIC WORK ON ASIA. Although described as a first part, no second part was published. DNB suggests that the second part of this work, always regarded as a separate publication, was Ogilby's Embassy to the Emperour of China, published in a second edition in 1673. Brunet IV, 174; Cox I, 275; Wing O-166.
