Shaped circular, on four cast grapevine openwork feet, the border of cast openwork grapevine with masks at intervals representing bacchantes, with snails and insects amidst the grapevine, the field engraved with a coat-of-arms within a rococo cartouche, marked on reverse and border
22¼ in. (56.5 cm.) diameter; 161 oz. 10 dwt. (5,030 gr.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Wrey quartering Bouchier, Plantagenet and Bohun, and impaling Edwards for Sir Bourchier Wrey, 6th baronet, colonel of the North Devon Militia and MP for Barnstaple 1749-50, who married Mary, daughter of John Edwards of Highgate in 1749. This salver was probably commissioned for their wedding.
