In the Meissen style, the couple modeled in the midst of a lively dance, clasping each other's hands and balancing on one foot as they look over each other's shoulder, the other foot raised in the air behind them, the lady with two long grey pigtails, on a mound base molded and applied with flowers

Lot Essay

This group is based on a Meissen group first modeled in 1735 by Johann Friederich Eberlein, which, due to its popularity, was later copied at Chelsea, Derby, Bow and in China. Five pairs of Chinese versions of this rare model were amongst the cargo of The Geldermalsen, which sank in 1752; see C. Sheaf and R. Kilburn, The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes, Oxford, 1988, pp. 152-154. A nearly identical model was in the Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Collection, sold Christie's, London, 10 April 2002, lot 505.
