Lot Essay

This drawing is thematically similar to Portrait of Miss Wallis as Tragedy and Comedy at Petworth House, West Sussex in that it seems to combine one woman in two guises or attitudes. The figure in pencil at the lower right seems to be the back of a male head watching the scene - and mimicking the viewer.

We are grateful to Alex Kidson for confirming the attribution and providing additional cataloguing information.
