Lot Essay

Major Geroge Bender, who was born in Boston, Massachusetts, joined the United States Army in 1812 and was promoted to Major of the 5th Infantry on April 23, 1830. The present portrait was begun on February 8, 1830 and completed on March 4, 1830.
