A Gray Schist Figure of a Standing Maitreya
Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century
Standing with the left knee slightly bent, clad in a flowing sanghati draped over the left shoulder and wearing sandals, adorned with multiple necklaces and armbands, the face with aquiline nose and heavy-lidded eyes centered by a raised urna, the hair pulled into a topknot, over a plinth centered by an altar with devotees on either side

Lot Essay

The well-modeled forms of the body are further enhanced by the exquisitely rendered sheerness of the robe, which also allows for glimpses of the deity's left armband and the dhoti knotted at the waist.
