Edo period (17th century), signed Hizen ju harima daijo Fujiwara Tadakuni
Sugata [configuration]: Shinogi-zukuri, iori-mune, shallow curve, chu-gissaki
Kitae [forging pattern]: Well-packed ko-itame with jinie
Hamon [tempering pattern]: Wide hamon of rounded choji with gunome interspersed with ko-notare, with ashi, yo, and sunagashi of deep nioi with much ko-nie
Boshi [tip]: Slight midare-komi with ko-maru kaeri and hakikake
Nakago [tang]: Ubu, osujigai file marks, two mekugi-ana one of which a shinobi-ana, shallow iriyamagata-jiri
Habaki [collar]: Double gold-clad copper
Nagasa [length of blade]: 69.6cm

The blade accompanied by a certificate of registration as a Juyo token (Important sword) no. 3110 issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword), 1969.4.26

Lot Essay

The smith was the son of Yoshiie of the Hashimoto group and a pupil of the first generation Tadayoshi of Hizen province (Nagasaki Prefecture). He was honored with the juryo title of Harima Daijo inscribed on this blade, probably in 1634.
