Lot Essay

Mona Lisa holds an old Danish typewriter.

Byun, who lives in New York, graduated from Chung-Ang University, Seoul, in 1974 and studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1981 to 1984. He had one-person exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern Art, Seoul, in 1980 and at the Debec Plaza Gallery, Daegu, in 2000. He also had one-person exhibitions at the Prezant Gallery, New York, in 1993, and at the Space Untitled Gallery, New York, in 1996 and 1997. In 2001, his work was exhibited in "Illusion and Reality: Hyperrealism Painting in Korea and America" at the Hoam Art Museum, Seoul (Leeum Samsung Museum of Art). His paintings are in the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon, Korea, and the Cleveland Museum of Art, among others.
