Lot Essay
This stool is almost certainly part of the suite of seat-furniture discussed by The Knight of Glin & J. Peill in Irish Furniture, New Haven & London, 2007, p. 216, no. 52 [armchair] & p. 219, no. 59 [stool]. The legs are faceted in the manner of a shell which in turn echoes the shell carved in the centre of the seat-rail. The armchair was sold anonymously, Christie's New York, 20 January 1996, lot 366 and may be the same as that sold by the late Brigadier W. E. Clarke, CMG, DSO, Christie's, London, 25 July 1969, lot 79. The stool was with Mallett, London in 1994. A pair of side chairs from the suite was sold by the late Simon Sainsbury, Esq., Christie's, London, 18 June 2008, lot 327 (£23,750).
