The unusual veneered decoration on this caddy imitates the late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century fashion for 'filigree' work or 'rolled paper' work, popular among women and girls from the growing middle classes as well as the upper classes. Shallow recessed wooden panels were filled with curls or numerous tiny rolls of paper. In the present example, the rolls of paper are replaced by slivers of rolled veneers.
