The present box, carved from brilliant white nephrite, is replete with auspicious wishes found amidst its decoration. The crane (he) and peach (tao), both symbols of longevity, together form the rebus heshou yannian (May the crane and peaches extend your years). The addition of the lingzhi fungus, another symbol of longevity, further strengthens this wish. The bat (fu) and water chestnut (biqi) on the interior of the cover represent connubial bliss, while the pomegranate carved in the interior of the box represents fertility, and the arrival of numerous sons.
