A RARE AND UNUSUAL IVORY-EMBELLISHED ZITAN TABLE SCREEN

Inset in high relief against a background of painted silk depicting a grand, European villa with well-carved ivory plaques of a man of middle-eastern origin watching as a groom holds the reins of a horned mythical beast, its forehead set with mother-of-pearl 'jewel', while a young boy plays at his feet with a large ball, all set into a zitan frame carved in openwork with a leafy scroll along the waist, the softwood back panel inlaid with a fruiting pomegranate branch
