A RARE LARGE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN
MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
Cast seated in dhyanasana with hands held in vitarka mudra, dressed in finely cast, loose, flowing robes open at the chest revealing elaborate jewelry, the cuffs and borders of the robes incised with floral scroll, the figure's broad face with downcast eyes, the hair dressed in knotted plaits and with elongated earlobes suspending ornate earrings, the tiered crown incorporating Amitabha Buddha, seated atop a separately cast lotus base raised on a column rising from a socket in the middle of the separate hexagonal base cast with crashing waves within an openwork balustrade with lotus buds at the corners

Lot Essay

Compare three similar large gilt-bronze figures of Avalokitesvara seated on lotus bases in the Chang Foundation, illustrated by J. Spencer, Buddhist Images in Gilt Metal, Taipei, 1993, nos. 37-9, where all three are dated 16th/17th century. A related, though larger (107.5 cm.) gilt-bronze figure of Avalokitesvara dated to 1660, also seated on a separate lotus base raised on a pedestal, was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29 May 2007, lot 1576.
