After a period of travelling through Italy, Spain and North Africa, he moved to Cornwall in 1960. Dolan's interest in St Ives was largely due to his friendship with Adrian Heath. He was member of the Penwith Society of Arts and exhibited with the Midland Group in Nottingham. Dolan has had one man shows at the Pasmore Edwards Gallery, Newlyn and the Queen's Square Gallery, Leeds. In 1962 he shared a show with Anthony Sheils and Alan Wood at Gallery 60 in Chichester, organised by the Rawlinsky Gallery and in 1965 he shared an exhibition with Wood at Queens Square Gallery, Leeds. In 1995 an exhibition of his works was shown by Belgrave Gallery, London.
