Lot Essay

This maquette was originally in the collection of William Rossa Cole, with whom Elliott Erwitt formed a lasting friendship in the early 1950s when Erwitt was just begining his career in New York. Mr. Cole was the head of public relations at Knopf and hired Erwitt to photograph authors for book jackets.
