Lot Essay

The original monument by Louis Royer, cast in iron, over life-size, was unveiled by King Willem II in Vlissingen on 25 August 1841.
Another reduction cast, virtual similar to the one offered here, is in the collection of the Amsterdams Historisch Museum and illustrated in G. van den Hout ao. Louis Royer 1793-1868, Een Vlaamse beeldhouwer in Amsterdam, Amsterdam, 1994, p. 70.
