No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VA… Read more Natural History of Guiana -- A collection of watercolours and drawings (lots 28-32) The present collection illustrating the flora and fauna of Guiana dates to the early 19th century (one sheet is watermarked 1805), some time ahead of the Schomburgks' surveying and botanising expeditions in the 1830s and 1840s. The colonies of Berbice and the United Colony of Demerara and Essequibo were ceded to Britain in 1814 (and unified as British Guiana in 1831). Fragments of a manuscript text which accompanied the unsigned sheets suggests an English author and points to the Guyanese subject matter: "[the electric eel] ... is a native of South America and is principally found in the river Surinam in the province of Guiana."
