PTOLEMAEUS, Claudius (c.100-c.178). Geographiae libri octo. Cologne: Gottfried von Kempen, 1584. 2° (398 x 264mm). Engraved ornamental title page incorporating a Ptolemaic world map, 27 double-page engraved maps, woodcut initials and text diagrams, ornamental tailpieces. (Lacking the smaller folding map Aegypti um Pelagus on leaf \Kc\k supplementary to Africae Tabula III, light browning and spotting, very small' light marginal dampstain to lower fore-edge.) Disbound, original stitching preserved, red edges (a couple of leaves at beginning and end with small marginal chips, last blank loose).
The second edition. Gerard Mercator (1512-1594), named by Ortelius as 'the Ptolemy of our time', engraved these copperplates as part of a cosmography which he planned to publish in five volumes. In the event, the Ptolemaic maps published here in the Geographia and four parts of the section of modern maps were the only works Mercator published before he died in 1594. Van der Krogt 1:502.
