BURCKHARDT, Johann Ludwig (1784-1817). Travels in Nubia. London: John Murray, 1819. 4° (267 x 210mm), portrait frontispiece etched by Angelica Clarke and 3 engraved maps, 2 folding (Spotting to frontispiece, lighter spotting to maps, and occasionally to text, both folding maps slightly torn, margins of 3I4-3K1 with offsetting from silk marker). Contemporary calf (boards detached). Provenance: William Sparrrow 1820 (title inscription).
FIRST EDITION, edited from Burckhardt's journals by William Leake, describing travels which took place in 1813 and 1814 on behalf of the African Association. It was the first of Burckhardt's works to be published, and included an account of his discovery of the temple of Abu Simbel ("Ebsambal") on 22 March, 1813. Howgego Exploration 1800 to 1850 B-76; cf. Blackmer 238 (second edition).
