Original embossed red cloth (spines faded and a little crinkled, vol. I with short tear to spine and slight split to front inner hinge, tiny hole and scuff mark to rear cover of vol. II). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH of what Erman's translator calls 'a philosophical survey of the coldest quarter of the earth'. It was part of an account of a journey round the world (published in Berlin, 1833-1842, in 5 vols), beginning when Erman went to Siberia in 1828 as a member of Christopher Hansteen's expedition to carry out magnetic measurements.
