FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, IN ORIGINAL CLOTH of what Erman's translator calls 'a philosophical survey of the coldest quarter of the earth'. It was part of an account of a journey round the world (published in Berlin, 1833-1842, in 5 vols), beginning when Erman went to Siberia in 1828 as a member of Christopher Hansteen's expedition to carry out magnetic measurements. The folding map illustrates his route through Siberia. cf. Howgego Encylopedia of Exploration 1800 to 1850 p. 206; and 2 other mid-19th century works in 5 vols. (7)
