Lot Essay

Created during the intense and optimistic period of artistic freedom after the October revolution, this poster marries two of the most important constructivist artists of the period, Eisentein and Rodchenko. Both men were pioneers in the use of montage, the method of creating an implicated third meaning through the collision images. For Eisenstein this involved the use of spliced film frames edited in ways in which to provoke, a technique we are very acustomed to today. Rodchenko's experimentation with montage is seen in much of his work, this poster is no exception. We look out onto the ships crew through a pair of binoculars which are effortlessly woven into the design.
