Lot Essay

The two similar cups are painted with alternating panels of heroes and heroines of Chinese history and their respective descriptive texts. They are taken from the manual 'Wu shaung pu' by Jin Gu Liang (circa mid-17th Century), which features forty heroes and heroines from the Han to the Song Dynasty. Later the contents of this work were enlarged to include various other important figures of Chinese history. This material was widely used to decorate porcelain during the Qing Dynasty and the Republican Period.
