Lot Essay
The present watercolour illustrates an episode from 'The Mermaid', from the Stories of Hans Andersen, published in October 1911 for which Dulac executed 28 colour ilustrations. The book included 'The Snow Queen', 'The Garden of Paradise', 'The Mermaid', 'The Emperor's New Clothes' and 'The Wind's Tale'. The present watercolour was illustrated on p. 183.
The publication of this book by Hodder and Stoughton was a great success, the deluxe edition of 750 copies sold out in weeks and very few of the special edition of 100 copies remained by December 1911. The book was advertised by promoting Dulac's watercolours as 'from end to end a delight' and 'a great illustrator's greatest success'. Other watercolours from this publication have held auction records for Dulac, 'The fairy dropped her shimmering garment', from The Garden of Paradise sold Sotheby's, London, 17 December 2009, lot 147, £39,650, and 'The Snow Queen spreading ice and snow about the town', was sold as part of the Collection of Jacqueline Onassis, Christie's, New York, 15 February 1985, lot 374, $74,700.
