Details
CHURCHILL, Winston S. The Interior of Sir John Lavery's Studio with two Ladies, oil on canvas board, 18 x 12in. (457 x 305mm), painted c.1922. Provenance: Sarah, Lady Audley; The Studio, Chartwell; Christie's, 20 June 1996, lot 73.
Exhibited: London, Wylma Wayne Fine Art, Sir Winston Churchill, June-July 1982, no.7, pl.3.
Literature: Churchill and his Paintings, London, 1967, no.26, p.99.
Churchill famously took up painting in a bid to escape the clutches of his depressive 'Black Dog' after his fall from office in 1915. Late 1922 would have afforded ample opportunities for painting, as he had lost not only his ministerial office, but also his seat at Dundee.
