Type: 2:114R, 7:114Gk. Opening 9-line initial in blue with fine red penwork decoration, 2- to 6-line initials and paragraph marks alternating in red or blue, printed guide-letters. (A few wormholes at beginning and end, occasional light marginal dampstain or spot, marginal erasure on G1, internal marginal tear in H1.) 19th-century blindstamped brown calf, red leather spine labels (lightly scuffed, spine and upper back cover sunned). Provenance: annotations in two contemporary hands, one probably Italian and the other (Y1) English, translating a few words into English -- Waddell/Weddell (bookplate) -- Sidney Hellman Ehrman (professor of Renaissance history, University of California, Berkeley; bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of the collected works of Politian, classical scholar and poet, and a leading figure of Renaissance humanism. Included among his own works is his translation from the Greek of Plato's 'Charmides', the second in print, following Ficino's, and also dedicated to Lorenzo de'Medici. The square unpointed Hebrew type on H8r is the FIRST USE OF HEBREW TYPE AT VENICE. Renouard (17:4) considered 'cette rare édition, l'une des plus belles qui soient sorties de l'imprimerie Aldine.'
