FANTI, Sigismondo (fl. 16th century). Triompho di fortuna. Venice: Agosino de'Zanni, for Jacopo Giunta, January 1526 [1527].

2° (320 x 220mm). Allegorical title-page printed in red and black signed 'I.M.' but probably by Dosso Dossi after Baldassare Peruzzi, extensively illustrated with woodcuts depicting astrological signs, facades of noble Italian houses, wheels of fortunes, historical and allegorical figures, etc. Armorial stamp on title-page. (Title supplied and repaired at fore-margin with small section replaced, last leaf in facsimile, 4 leaves in quire A and possibly a few others supplied from another copy, G5 lower half replaced in facsimile, A2 lower margin replaced, neat repaired tears in several leaves, with small loss in about 3.) Modern calf, gilt fillet border, spine lettered in gilt, green fore-edges.

FIRST EDITION of the second illustrated fortune-telling book. It consists largely of woodcuts and presents a game in which the player moves from figures of Fortune to houses, wheels, spheres and astrologers, determined on a throw of dice or time of day when the book is consulted. A sculptor working in marble is identified as Michelangelo. Two issues are known, distinguished by the date of 1526 or 1527 in the colophon; the present issue is unknown since the colophon leaf is in facsimile. RARE, only the Schaefer copy has sold at auction in over 30 years. Adams F-150; Essling p.652; Mortimer, Harvard Italian 180; Sander 2653.
