2 parts in one volume, 2° (504 x 335mm). Half-title. Text in French. Hand-coloured engraved titles. 120 engraved maps, all but one double-page, 5 folding, ALL COLOURED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Map 2, 'Regiones sub Polo Arctico', in the first state without the dedication. (Map 16 of Lithuania loose, variable light browning and spotting throughout, some dozen maps more heavily affected.) Contemporary vellum, gilt covers, gilt edges (Extremities rubbed, more heavily to head of fore-edge of lower cover, vellum lightly soiled and slightly warped). Provenance: ink manuscript date of 1723 and small associated pen trial to front pastedown.

The first volume of one of the French editions of Blaeu's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. It covers northern Europe, including Scandinavia, Iceland, the Baltic states, Russia, Germania and the Low Countries. Compared with the edition of 1638/1640, the text in this issue has been reset, page numbers added, and 20 maps from the 'Appendice' inserted. Koeman Bl 19B; van der Krogt 2:213.1HM.
