Lot Essay

The Order of St Anne was originally founded in Kiel by Duke Karl Friedrich of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp to commemorate his wife Anna Petrovna, daughter of Peter I of Russia. The order was re-established by Paul I of Russia in 1797, when it became associated with St Anne. The order was awarded mostly for long and distinguished civil service and for valour and outstanding achievements in the military.
