Chao Tsong Yea (1912-1999), native of Jiangsu, graduated from Shanghai's Soochow University and took up his profession as a lawyer. Seeing an opportunity to develop the shipping industry and providing necessary materials to the mainland, Chao used his savings and bought a second hand ship, named it 'The National Star' (guo xing hao) and gained much success. Chao's wife Ni Yazhen was his university classmate and later gave birth to four sons and a daughter. In 1948, Chao took his family and immigrated to Hong Kong and established his own shipping company. Later the company diversified to trade development and further expanded his shipping business to include larger fleets, gaining the title 'the first generation shipping magnate'.
