Lot Essay

Table carpets were used in wealthy, usually aristocratic households and were a potent symbol of wealth and taste. When the table was in use, they would be covered. At other times, they would have pride of place as an object of high status. They feature occasionally in inventories of the times as noteworthy items. Carpets for use under foot, sometimes noted as 'foote carpets', are more costly again.
