Lot Essay

The present lot appears to be an autograph work by Ostade of 1636. The lively brushwork and tonality appear in other works by the artist of this period, such as Carousing Peasants in an Interior (Munich, Älte Pinakothek) and Dancing Couple (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum). However, on the basis of a digital photograph, Dr. Bernhard Schnackenburg believes this painting to be an old copy after a lost original.
