Lot Essay

Munnings frequently experimented with this theme of a huntsman manoeuvering through thick brush approaching a bank or ditch and this is typical of his style at this date. His own hunting experiences often inspired his vision and it is probable that this horse is 'the brown mare' whom Munnings describes in his memoirs as 'a dark brown six-year-old mare fifteen hands three inches high with a cock tail...Good natured to the last degree, she served as a hack, hunter and model...[She was] "a good 'un"' (A.J. Munnings, An Artist's Life, Bungay, 1950, pp. 183-4).

This work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Sir Alfred Munnings being prepared by Lorian Peralta-Ramos.
