Lot Essay

Diary: 1 February 1976
Kulkarni's done 2 portraits in sculpture of me SOUZA & ANTI-SOUZA. Santosh did an oil portrait ten years ago; I saw it again - I had painted the background and signed it too. Santosh has added two more portraits since, one of Ghalib and the other of Picasso: I'm in good company. In 1963 Jatin Das did me in oil too and so did Husain in 1948.
My own self portrait I did in 1949 was full length in the nude.

This stunning watercolour is a study for the life-size nude self-portrait Souza produced that same year, which featured in the Tate Britain display curated by Toby Treves in 2005. This work exudes the care Souza undertook in preparatory works for paintings and illustrates seeds to the layered applications later evident in the oil painting. The angular outlines and strong brushstrokes, coupled with opposing colours, show affinities to artists Oskar Kokoschka and German Expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.
This work also includes Untitled (Landscape with Mountain) signed and dated ' Souza 1949' Image: 16 7/8 x 13 1/8 in. (42.9 x 33.5 cm.)
Overall:16 7/8 x 27 in. (42.9 x 68.6 cm.)
Executed in 1949, on folded section of overall sheet
