Lot Essay

This poster is rare alternative monochrome version of the standard promotional poster, with additional information such as ticket prices and directions to the ground. From the outset the band were directly involved with organising this concert, from choosing 'friends' such as Lou Reed, Humble Pie and Bad Company to support, to selecting the venue because of its particular acoustics and excellent views. The intention was to record the show's finale to be used in the film 'Tommy', but the show was actually recorded by the BBC. However, even though they performed in front of an estimated 80,000 fans, the show was not the success they had planned, instead the band felt they were just going through the motions, with Entwistle stating he was ready to quit.
