Engraved map, 23¾ x 23¼ in. Hand-colored in outline in four colors (trimmed close to printed border on top and left-hand edges, small hole at one fold intersection, otherwise a very good copy).
An important post-Revolutionary map of Virginia, based on a draft by Thomas Jefferson, and used in the first Paris edition of the Notes on the State of Virginia. The same engraving was used again a few weeks later in Stockdale's first English edition of Jefferson's Notes. In its preparation, Jefferson drew upon cartographic work by several authorities, particularly the Fry and Jefferson map of Virginia (1751, additions in 1755), Nicholas Scull's 1770 map of Pennsylvania, and Thomas Hutchins' map of Virginia (1778).
