FAULKNER, William. Go Down, Moses and Other Stories. New York: Random House, 1942.

8o. Original rose half cloth and boards, top edge gilt (some spotting to endleaves and first and last leaves); cloth folding case.

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 92 of 100 copies SIGNED by Faulkner. This is the smallest limitation of any of Faulkner's limited, signed editions and is among his scarcest books. Thomas Verich, curator of the Faulkner Collection at the University of Mississippi, locates fewer than 50 copies in his 1991 census.

Go Down, Moses and Other Stories contains the first book appearance of Faulkner's seminal story, "The Bear." Though sections of the book had originally been published as separate stories, Faulkner actually conceived of it as a novel and in all subsequent printings altered the title to Go Down, Moses (without "and Other Stories"). See Thomas M. Verich "Go Down, Moses and Other Stories: A Preliminary Census of the Limited, Signed Edition of 100 Numbered Copies." Mississippi Quarterly 44.3 (Summer 1991): 337-45. Massey 448; Petersen A23.2a.
