FIRST EDITION. The Duc de Luynes was an archeologist whose interests included numismatics, and ceramics. He also had a keen interest in architecture, art and photography, and he collected art, ancient metals, stones, coins and Greek vases. In 1864, he sponsored an expedition to Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria; his notes from this expedition were used in the posthumous publication of this work which contains descriptions of the journey from Duc de Luynes and other members of the traveling party as well as an account of the palentology, mineralogy and geology of the region. The illustrations in this work are after photographs taken by Louis Vignes, an amateur photographer who accompanied the party on this trip. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only one complete copy has sold in the last 30 years. An accurate collation of this work has not been established. Rohricht 2824 (calling for 86 plates).
