Bernd H. Dams grew up in Mülheim a.d. Ruhr, Germany and wrote his doctoral thesis on the genesis of the French Royal Château of Marly. Both artists trained as architects and began working together in the early 1990s in the offices of Robert A.M. Stern Architects, New York. They have published a number of books such as Pleasure Pavilions & Follies (1995) and Palaces of the Sun King: Versailles, Trianon, Marly (2002). Together Zega and Dams execute watercolours celebrated for their vivid realism and historical accuracy, most frequently illustrating decorative French architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries, particularly that of the Château de Versailles. As the buildings depicted have often been destroyed, they derive their inspiration from contemporary texts and illustrations, providing a unique insight into a subsequently lost world of flamboyance and ornamentation. Their watercolours feature in many important collections, both private and public, including The Museum of the Ile-de-France, Princeton University, Hubert de Givenchy and Oscar de la Renta.
