Lot Essay

George Charles Bingham, 3rd Earl of Lucan GCB (1800-1888), styled Lord Bingham before 1839, was a British soldier, remembered for his part in the Crimean War. He was the nephew of Lavinia, Countess Spencer (1762-1831) wife of George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834) and is painted here by his sister.

Lady Elizabeth Harcourt (née Bingham) was taught by Paul Sandby, R.A. (1731-1809), one of the most sought-after drawing masters of the period. A watercolour, by Sandby, of Lady Elizabeth Harcourt drawing is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue Paul Sandby, Picturing Britian, London, 2010, p. 172, no. 67.
