Lot Essay

The present composition is only known through an etching and a copy after a painting by Adriaen van der Werff (see: B. Gaehtgens, Adriaen van der Werff, München, 1987, p. 209, no. 11a.). Van der Werff probably based his composition on Eglon van der Neer's picture in the Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe.
