Lot Essay

Mary Hutchinson (Mrs St John Hutchinson, 1889-1977), writer, patron and hostess, was painted on several occasions by Vanessa Bell (e.g. Tate, London; 1915) and Duncan Grant (her first cousin once removed) between 1915 and 1917. This drawing belongs to several studies of her made at Charleston in April 1917, although Grant seems not to have completed a further painting of her (or, if he did, it is now untraced). For another drawing from these later sittings, see R. Shone, The Art of Bloomsbury, Tate Gallery, London, 1999, p. 258, no. 172.
