Lot Essay

Adler met Paul Klee whilst teaching in Dusseldorf in 1931. It was probably from Klee that Adler learnt the technique of carbon transfer drawing or 'offset' monotype which he later passed on to many young British artists in the 1940s, Colquhoun and MacBryde among them. The method consisted of inking a sheet of paper, laying another sheet over it, and drawing on the fresh paper which received the ink in a linear manner.
