Each of circular form, on spreading gadrooned base, the cylindrical bodies engraved with panels of trelliswork, strapwork and floral ornament over a matted ground, the flat-domed covers engraved with a frieze of strapwork and foliage over a matted ground, and with gadrooned border, the centre finely engraved with accolé coats-of-arms 12.6cm. (5in.) diam.

Lot Essay

The coats-of-arms are those of Gaspard-César-Charles L'Escaloppier who married in 1737 Anne Leclerc de Lesseville. He was Maitre des Requêtes, Conseiller du Roi Louis XV and between 1756 and 1766, became Intendant de Tours.

A shaped-circular dish attributed to Nicolas Besnier, now preserved in the Louvre collection, Paris, Catalogue 1958, nr 60, plate XV, is engraved with the same coats-of-arms.
