A painting of Krishna
North India, Pahari region, circa 1800
With the four-armed god seated on an animal skin in a simple abode at right, flanked by a worshipping couple, a hermit in a hut behind a tree at center, and an elderly holy man with parasol taking his leave from well-wishers, left, all in a verdant landscape with deer and peacock in the foreground
Opaque pigmetns and gold on wasli
9¼ x 12 in. (23.4 x 30.4 cm.)
The older ascetic at far left may be Vamana, the dwarf avatar of Vishnu. If so, this painting may depict Krishna telling the story of Vamana as a didactic tale to worshippers.
